New Year’s Eve Church Service     December 31-January 1

A special New Year’s Eve Church Service will extend out into the street in Logan Heights. With joy and singing, parishioners will give thanks to God for the past year and welcome in the New Year. At midnight, the service will be over and a festive celebration will begin with food and games. 8:00pm - 4:00am. 31st Annual Polar Bear Plunge     January 1

It’s that time of year when nearly 200 swimmers dare to scramble the sandy shoreline and plunge into the icy cold ocean at La Jolla Shores. Some swimmers will be wearing wetsuits, and others will only be clad in bathing suits. Lifeguards and support crew will be on hand in kayaks and jet skis. 10:00am - 11:00am. Whale Watching Everyday     January 2-April 15

Private setting aboard beautifully appointed 28’ sailboats, get up close and personnel with the sea life! Iced bottled water, assorted beverages, salty & sweet treats. View the Gray Whales as they begin their annual migration from Alaska to Baja California where their breeding grounds lie. Gray whales may grow anywhere from 30 to 50 feet in length and live an average of 40 years and can be found just a few miles off of Point Loma. Other wildlife such as sea lions, blue herons and three kinds of dolphins may also make an appearance. $75 per person. 12am-4pm Daily. San Diego Boat Show - 20th Anniversary     January 3-6

What better way to celebrate the New Year than at the 2008 San Diego Boat Show? San Diego Resolution Run     January 5

Beginning with a post-race expo at Mission Bay, this event offers 5K, 10K, and 15K races. Proceeds will benefit an organization known as Insulindependence that aims to change the lives of diabetics through adventure travel, educational outreach, and web-based community support. 7:30am - 11:00am. Rose Pruning Demonstration     January 5-6

You can learn how to prune rose bushes by watching a demonstration at the Rose Garden in Balboa Park. Pruning rose bushes in January and February simulate winter conditions that help roses to rest so they can obtain good root growth and beautiful Spring blossoms. 9:00am - 12:00pm.
