Tips To Get Your House Ready For A Holiday Vacation
August 31, 2007
Shhh — Be cautious who you tell about your departure, only tell a trusted neighbor when and where you are going.
Time Out — Hook a timer up to lights, televisions and radios. This gives the illusion that someone’s home. Adjust the timer’s setting to your normal routine.
Button Up — Make sure that everything is locked up and secure before heading out.
Snail Mail — Get the post office to hold your mail while you’re away. Or ask a neighbor to collect your mail and newspapers for you.
Hidden Treasure — Keep valuables such as jewelry and important documents in a safe-deposit box.
Who is it? An unanswered phone might tip off a prowler that no one is home. Turn off the ringer to the phone while you’re away and most definitely don’t vocalize your departure on your answering machine message.
Free Parking — Ask your neighbor to park their car in your driveway while you are away. This gives the house a “lived in” feel.
Shut Down — Before heading out make sure you turn off your computer and cut off your electricity, gas and water to avoid potential flood, gas leakage or fire.
